The Whitechapel Murders By, Kelenna Obi
From the dates of August 7 to September 10, a man who went by the name "Jack the Ripper", menaced the Whitechapel district in London. He managed to kill 5 women, and disfigure their remains in a very disgusting way. This man was one of the most evil serial killers in history. All of the murders occurred about a mile apart from each other, and also included other districts beside Whitechapel. Jack the Ripper has never been actually identified yet, so England was very worried at the time.
On August 31, 1888, a 43 year old woman named Polly Nichols got murdered in her own bedroom. Jack the Ripper left severe injuries on the body, including a slashed throat and abdomen. Then on the 8th of September, a 47 year old prostitute named Annie Chapman was brutally murdered in her own house. And then on November 9, 1888, a young 25 year old lady named Mary Kelly was murdered, and her decomposed body was found in her rented room. Her body was so badly mutilated, her body made her identity anonymous.
After Jack the Ripper committed these gruesome crimes, a clothing company named L&P Walter & sons, wrote to the Home office asking for a reward if the killer was caught. Much to the alarm of the public, the government declined the incoming request. The government decided to cancel the reward, because if a reward was given, it would motivate people to give false information, in order to receive the reward. There was a large amount of nervousness from the public, because the detectives and police officers, could not unmask the killer. Due to this, Jack the Ripper now had a negative reputation.
By September, many detectives and policemen had been moved into the east, and they joined and formed the Whitechapel vigilance committee. The group began to question everyone over the east side of London, and try to arrest suspects. The detectives and policemen came up with the conclusion that "Jack the Ripper" had some anatomical knowledge, because of how quickly he cut up the bodies of the victims.
As the police was still searching for Jack the Ripper, the people that lived in Whitechapel tried to think past it, or not worry about it. Nevertheless, the killer had plans for most of the citizens. Jack the Ripper wrote another letter to the police department taunting them. I directly quote from his letter "My knife so nice and sharp, I want to get to work right away." Jack the Ripper's goal was to take a plea credit for the murders, and that is the reason for him sending letters to the police.
His murders had shocked the public, and was about to shock Whitechapel even more. On the 30th of September, Jack the Ripper killed his third victim Elizabeth Stride, a 44 year old women. Police officers arrived quickly on the scene, and quickly created a search of the land. But then again, Jack the Ripper fled the scene and struck another person. On the same day at 1:45 a.m., Catherine Eddowes was brutally killed becoming Jack the Ripper;s fourth victim.
Jack the Ripper attacked her face, and took her organs out in a very brutal way. He put V shaped cuts on her cheek, and the tip of her nose was cut off. Also, part of her earlobes had been detached, and immediately fell off. Her intestines was removed, and he took away the left kidney from connecting to the uterus. Jack the Ripper had left her body out in an alley, with many missing bones
from her body.
The police found some clues in Goulston street in the East End. One of the clues include a piece of apron, this is significant because it was a section of Catherine Eddowes apron. Jack the Ripper used this apron to wipe his hands on it, which was coated all over in blood from inside her body. Many bystanders who had seen the two women before their deaths, gave evidence to the police department. A Hungarian immigrant named Israel Schwartz, witnessed a man beat Elizabeth Stride, before she was killed.
The mayor of London, displayed a five hundred dollar offering, for any information about Jack the Ripper. The mayor surprisingly had gotten almost 1,400 letters of full information. The mayor suspected that most of them were fake, because all of the information were different in all, and did not connect in any ways possible. Meantime, Jack the Ripper motivated prostitutes to always stay inside, and to not go out alone. Because of this, Scotland Yard (Headquarters of the Metropolitan Police) expanded the patrols on duty to 27,289.
One October 16th, Jorge Lascar (leader of the Whitechapel Vigilance committee) had been delivered a mail in the mailbox. The mail was a very small cardboard box, that held half of the human kidneys, evenly divided, and a letter! The letter was called From Hell, by Jack the Ripper. He stated in the letter that it was half of the kidney taken from a woman which he kept for safe keeping! Even when Jorge Lascar was examining the kidney, Scotland Yard brought in eighty suspects to question them, but unfortunately, no arrests were made.
In the early morning of November 9th, a man foreign looking, went into Mary Jane Kelly's room and killed the young 25 year old lady, becoming Jack the Rippers last and final victim. Mary Jane Kelly's murder was very horrifying, because Jack the Murderer actually ripped her bodies to pieces! Her organs were spread all over the bed, and her thighs were sized down to the bone. The face had been removed too. Every organ was taken out of her body, except the heart. At least 5 women had been murdered in the hands of Jack the Ripper.
The identity of Jack the Ripper, is something that may never be discovered. When researching the Jack the Ripper murder, Neil Stubbins had found the only known picture of one of the victims of Jack the Ripper named Annie Chapman. In the year of 2003, Patricia Cornwell she came to the conclusion that the so called "Jack the Ripper", was the painter Walter Sickens. In May 2006, a DNA analysis was performed in Australia, and they all agreed that killer might have been a woman! If we all work together to solve the crime, we may one day reveal the true identity of Jack the Ripper.
